Tourney Win for Girls

26 January, 2019

To start with, it didn't look like that at all. A very lackluster first half performance against Richmond B resulted in a 1-4 football score after 15 minutes of play. Reinforcements arrived in the second half and somehow, the scales tipped and the Blackhawks ran out winners 5-4. Let’s just say both teams were a tad nervous but played amazing defence.

The second game was against Richmond A, who had just beaten Cheam 32-8. Things didn't look very promising. Now, forgive me for saying this, but unless coach Adrien gave the girls a special drink before the game, I cannot explain what happened next.

The Blackhawks took the Knights by storm. All of a sudden, layups poured in, rebounds were plucked out of the sky repeatedly, balls to which we had no right were contested and often won, even shots were going in from everywhere and everybody.

The defensive effort was exemplary and those of us on the fringes of the action were pinching ourselves to ensure this wasn't just a cruel dream. At the end of the first half the score was 24-2 and at the end of the game 47-9. Extraordinary.

Richmond B take a time-out

Theoretically, the last game should be easy pickings as Cheam had already lost both their games and had scored a total of 14 points in their two games against the two Richmond teams.

Thankfully, the Young Blackhawks carried on from where they had left off and led the half 30-0, baskets raining in from just about anyone coach Adrien decided to place on the court. Once again, the defence was incredible. I mean, a clean sheet? More of the same in the second half and with all the girls in party mood, the final score peaked at 47-2 and the Blackhawks U13 Girls were declared tournament winners. This is the first time in the Club's history that a girls team won an AGT (All-Girls Tournament). Here's to many more!

There were two 15-minute halves per game and the games were officiated by Mark Fellows (ref), Kenny Kong (ref) and Rachel Pattison, Russell Fernandes, Oliver Winton, Henry Winton (TOs). The tournament was organised by Costas Rakitzis (Woking Blackhawks).

For referees new to the game, it is not unusual for a referee to be attacked during his lunch time break by a coach (his own daughter on this occasion) if the decisions have not been to the coach's liking. Refs, you have been warned.
