A Point To Prove: Blackhawks Narrowly Win Nail-biting Return Fixture

An exhausted team after the matchAn exhausted team after the match

This week our match report has been written by Yahya.

In mid-January we played our away-game against our best competition in the league, Reading Rockets. Playing for the Blackhawks were Youssef, Jonathan, Ben, Sean, Julian, Jack, Temi, Joe, Kai, and Yahya. Thomas was injured, but he came along to support the team.

The game began with Reading scoring the first two points but we came back strong with Sean scoring a layup, Julian blocking, and Yahya scoring a free throw. Then, Jack scored a nice fast break, Joe scored two nice layups, and Jonathan attacked the basket well, scoring a nice shot. This helped us to get a good 19-15 lead in the first quarter.

During the second quarter we played a good help defence and switched well on screens. We scored many buckets in transition and scored 16 points to keep the lead, while only allowing Reading to score 14. Kai had some good put backs and Temi scored 2 of his clutch three throws. Sean racked up a charge. Ben did a great job of keeping the ball in play therefore Jack sunk the jump shot in and later made a nice floater. Youssef sunk an and-1 from great spacing and passing.

The third quarter is where they got us. Sean scored a nice 3 pointer and we scored some nice transition buckets but overall we sagged off in defence and allowed them to score more points than us. This is where the score became even and led to a competitive fourth quarter.

During the fourth quarter Reading started off strong scoring many points early on, but Woking began to work some buckets when Kai sank in 2 clutch free throws and then Sean scored a good bucket from an attack. Shortly afterword’s Youssef scored with a nice post move. We got back in the game and played great defence with great ball movement on offense which created open shots. Sean then scored a great clutch bucket in transition just before the timeout which pulled us to only one point behind.

As Reading were inbounding the ball 9.5 seconds from the end Youssef found his chance and stole the ball, he then assisted Kai, who scored the last point of the game. With 3 seconds left Reading missed a final shot and this led to our victory against Reading Rockets. A dramatic, well-deserved win!
